At 1503 the tone hit for a possible structure fire. Shortly after Capt. Meads (606) was on location reporting smoke on approach from a two story single family dwelling. Automatic dual response had units from Waterloo Fire as well as Omaha Fire enroute. Capt. Meads reported smoke coming from the roof around the chimney and instructed first due Bennington 630 to tag a hydrant and advance a line into the second floor as the fire was believed to be in the attic. Once inside 630's crew discovered moderate smoke on the second floor but found no fire. A quick check of the attic revealed no fire either. 630's crew then began a thorough check of the entire second floor. In a back bedroom they discovered blistering drywall in the area of the chimney. As the drywall was pulled fire was discovered burning in the wall and had burned through the exterior wall.
A working fire was declared and a second alarm was sounded at this point for a ladder truck from Irvington Fire, due to the height of the structure. The second in Bennington crew was ordered into the structure with the task of pulling ceiling on the level directly under the fire floor. Bennington 645 arrived and established a backup water supply. Waterloo 831 arrived on location and was tasked with laddering the roof to check for any fire conditions, which was negative. 831's crew removed several roof vents to assist with ventilating the structure. Omaha Fire's Rescue One arrived and was sent to the attic to check for extension, once again no fire in the attic. Irvington 450 arrived and assisted with PPV of the structure and then moved into the structure to assist with overhaul.
Thanks to the homeowner's fire alarm and a quick response from the Bennington Fire Dept., fire damage to the structure was limited to four rooms. All Bennington units were in service at 1711.
