Bennington Fire and Rescue is a 100% volunteer fire department and services roughly 42 square miles of northwestern Douglas County, Nebraska including the City of Bennington and 6 square miles of southern Washington County, Nebraska. We provide fire protection and emergency medical services to the residents of our fire district, which includes the cities of Bennington and Washington.
Our fire district is primarily rural, however there has been a population growth over the past several years that is turning much of the farmland between Bennington and Omaha into densely populated neighborhoods. The majority of these neighborhoods are being serviced by MUD for water thus growing our areas protected by fire hydrants by leaps and bounds. We operate two class A pumpers that are equipped to pump water from both fire hydrants and external water supplies (ie. drop tanks, ponds etc.). In addition we have a 4x4 truck designed to fight weed/grass fires in our vastly rural areas.
Bennington Fire and Rescue operates an ALS (advanced life support) ambulance service. We currently have two ALS equipped ambulances that are stocked with state of the art equipment to provide our citizens with the best care available. The majority of our calls for service are for medical emergencies or trauma related accidents. All of our members are State of Nebraska certifed Emergency Medical Technicians at a minimun. We are also fortunate enough to have six members of our department that are Nationally Certified Paramedics. Recently our paramedics partnered with Alegent Health Immanuel Medical Center in performing 12-Lead EKGs in the field. This partnership made Bennington Fire and Rescue the pioneers in in-field 12-lead EKGs in eastern Nebraska.
There are several lakes in the Bennington fire district, both fishing and recreational. The developer of one of the lake neighborhoods donated a Zodiac rescue boat to the Bennington Fire Department. With the addition of the rescue boat we began training to expand our services to surface water rescue as well as ice rescue.
The members of Bennington Fire and Rescue spend numerous hours every month training to provide the highest quaility of service to all the members of our community. We take great pride in the fact that we are able to help people in their time of need.
